As the weather changes and cold and flu season approaches, it’s essential for parents to consider how to support their children’s immune systems. Here are my top naturopathic recommendations for bolstering your kid’s immunity holistically.
1. Probiotics:
A solid probiotic is my top recommendation. A healthy gut supports a robust immune system. When choosing a high-quality probiotic, consider the type of beneficial bacteria, the dosage, and your child's likelihood of compliance—taste is crucial! Many children prefer gummies or tasty chewables. My favorites are Mega Sporebiotic gummies for kids and HMF Child chewables. I suggest giving your child a daily probiotic throughout the winter months.
2. Vitamins C and D:
Vitamin C and Vitamin D are essential parts of my kids' daily routine. My children love the gummies from Mary Ruth’s, and they remind us to take them every day! While vitamin C is best obtained from food, the gummies provide a helpful supplement with 125 mg of vitamin C each. For Vitamin D, Mary Ruth’s gummy offers 1,000 IU per gummy. If your child needs more, consider the Megadose liquid D3, which provides up to 4,000 IU per milliliter.
3. Elderberry:
Elderberry is one of the tastiest ways to support your child’s immune system—there’s little chance they’ll complain! I recommend elderberry tablets during the winter months. While elderberry syrup is a popular option, it can be high in sugar. Tablets tend to have lower sugar content per dose. My kids love Nature’s Way Sambucus Elderberry chewable tablets and Mary Ruth’s Elderberry chewable tablets. Both have a pleasant balance of sweet and tart flavors, making them a delightful addition to your wellness routine.
4. Herbal Teas:
For kids who enjoy tea, Traditional Medicinals offers excellent wellness teas. During colder months, I can get my 7-year-old to enjoy a warm cup of Organic Echinacea Plus. We don’t use honey, but stevia drops are a great alternative. Local or Manuka honey can also enhance this immune-boosting drink. Kids can sip this tea whether they’re feeling under the weather or just want a comforting drink!
5. Herbal Tinctures:
When kids do get sick, my last two recommendations focus on treatment rather than prevention. Wish Garden offers tasty herbal tinctures that are easy to dose. If your child is fighting a bacterial infection, use Kick-It Biotic Immune Hero right away. For viral infections, Kick-It Immune Activator is a great option. These herbal tinctures can help your child recover more quickly while they rest at home.
Additional Tips:
Limit sugar intake when your child is sick or if other kids are sick around them.
Keep them hydrated and ensure they get enough sleep.
Discuss proper handwashing techniques.
Cook with fresh medicinal foods like onion, garlic, ginger, thyme, rosemary, and sage. If your child is sensitive to strong flavors, try adding small amounts to simple dishes like soups to gauge their response.
By taking these steps, you can help support your child's immune health during cold and flu season.
